PRINCE2 Practitioner is the application level of the PRINCE2 certification scheme. Where Foundation checks that you know the method's vocabulary and structure, Practitioner tests whether you can apply and tailor the PRINCE2 7 method to project scenarios: given a situation, is this action appropriate, and why? The current version is PRINCE2 7; PeopleCert retired the 5th and 6th Editions, and since 2025 only the PRINCE2 7 exam can be taken.
The exam is objective testing in an open-book format - you may consult the official PRINCE2 manual during the exam (exact rules on permitted materials are set by PeopleCert's exam regulations). It has 56 questions and sub-questions worth 70 marks in 150 minutes, with a 60% pass mark (42 of 70 marks). Do not let 'open book' fool you: the time pressure means candidates who need to look everything up run out of minutes. PeopleCert does not publish per-topic question weights for Practitioner; the exam is built on the PRINCE2 7 framework of people, principles, practices, processes and project context, and the official syllabus (distributed through PeopleCert channels) is the authoritative breakdown.
A notable feature of Practitioner is its entry routes: you do not necessarily need PRINCE2 Foundation. PMP, CAPM, IPMA Level A-D and several other credentials are accepted as prerequisites, so experienced project managers can go straight to Practitioner. The certification is valid for three years and must be renewed - either by re-taking the exam or through PeopleCert's membership and CPD scheme.

Pass rate: Not published. PeopleCert does not release official pass rates for PRINCE2 Practitioner. The pass mark is 60% (42 of 70 marks), and the open-book format makes the exam manageable for well-prepared candidates, but any specific pass-rate percentage you see online is an unofficial estimate, not an official figure.

Is it worth it?
Worth it if you already work - or want to work - where PRINCE2 is the operating language: the UK, much of Europe, government and public-sector delivery, and consultancies serving them. Practitioner is the level employers there actually mean when they ask for 'PRINCE2'. If your market is North America or a pure-agile environment, PMP or Scrum credentials usually return more. If you hold PMP already, Practitioner is a comparatively cheap, fast add-on for UK/EU credibility because you can skip Foundation.

Keeping your certification
PRINCE2 Practitioner is valid for 3 years. Two renewal routes: (1) re-take and pass the exam before expiry, or (2) join PeopleCert Plus membership (EUR 149/year incl. VAT, Germany price - varies by region) and log 20 CPD points per year for three consecutive years. If you do neither, the certification lapses.
FAQ
- Do I need PRINCE2 Foundation before Practitioner?
- Not necessarily. Foundation is one route, but PeopleCert also accepts PMP, CAPM, IPMA Level A-D, PPQ, PMQ and CSPM-2/3 as prerequisites, and older 5th/6th Edition PRINCE2 certificates also qualify. Only candidates with none of these must pass Foundation first.
- Is the PRINCE2 Practitioner exam open book?
- Yes. It is an open-book exam - the official PRINCE2 manual is the permitted reference, under PeopleCert's exam rules. It is still time-pressured: 56 questions and sub-questions worth 70 marks in 150 minutes leaves little room to look everything up, so learn the method and use the book only to confirm.
- How hard is Practitioner compared with Foundation?
- It is a different kind of exam. Foundation asks what the method says; Practitioner gives you a project scenario and asks whether an action is appropriate and why. Recall alone is not enough - you need to apply and tailor the method. Most people find it harder despite the open book.
- How long is PRINCE2 Practitioner valid?
- Three years. You renew either by re-taking the exam before expiry, or through PeopleCert Plus membership by logging 20 CPD points per year for three consecutive years. An unrenewed certification lapses.
- How much does PRINCE2 Practitioner cost?
- PeopleCert prices by region, so there is no single global fee. As a reference point, the Germany exam bundle showed EUR 526 (list EUR 701, incl. VAT) at our last verification, with pricier bundles that add official eLearning or a free retake. Check the official page for your country's price.
- PRINCE2 Practitioner or PMP - which is better?
- They answer different questions. PRINCE2 Practitioner certifies command of a specific method, strongest in the UK, Europe and the public sector; PMP certifies broad experience-based competence and dominates North America and global corporates. Choose by target market - and note each is accepted as a prerequisite context for the other's ecosystem: PMP even qualifies you to sit Practitioner directly.
- Can I take the Practitioner exam online?
- Yes. PeopleCert delivers it as a web-based proctored online exam bookable worldwide, and accredited training organisations can also arrange it. It does not run through Pearson VUE or Prometric.
- What happens if I fail?
- You can re-sit the exam. The eLearning+ bundle includes one free retake, and PeopleCert also offers a paid retake option (Take2) whose price varies by region and time of purchase.
