Overview
PRINCE2 Foundation is the entry level of the PRINCE2 method, a structured, process-based approach to project management that is widely used in the UK, Europe and the public sector. Unlike PMP, it has no experience prerequisite, so it is accessible to people early in their careers.
Foundation tests whether you understand the method's principles, themes and processes well enough to work in a PRINCE2 environment. The follow-on Practitioner level tests whether you can apply and tailor the method to a real project.
Who it is for
- People starting out in project coordination or management
- Team members in organisations that use PRINCE2
- Professionals in the UK, Europe and government where PRINCE2 is common
Who it is not for
- Teams in pure-agile environments (consider PSM or PMP).
- Those in North America, where PMP dominates (PRINCE2 is strongest in the UK and Europe).
- People wanting deep people-leadership content — PRINCE2 is process-focused.
Exam structure
| Principles | The seven principles that define a PRINCE2 project |

Is it worth it?
Worth it if you work, or want to work, in UK, European or government environments where PRINCE2 is the common language. It is accessible with no experience requirement. If your market is North America or you already have delivery experience, PMP usually carries more weight.
What to do next
PRINCE2 Foundation leads to Practitioner. Compare PMP vs PRINCE2 to decide which framework fits your region and employer.
FAQ
- Is PRINCE2 Foundation hard?
- It is an entry-level exam. With a few days of focused study most people pass. The content is structured and definition-heavy rather than scenario-based at Foundation level.
- Do I need Foundation before Practitioner?
- Yes. PRINCE2 Foundation is a prerequisite for the Practitioner exam, which tests applying and tailoring the method.
- PRINCE2 or PMP — which should I take?
- PRINCE2 is method-based and strong in the UK, Europe and government; PMP is experience-based and dominant globally and in North America. Choose by your target market, or take both.
