Overview
The PMP (Project Management Professional) is the most widely recognised project management certification worldwide. Unlike a framework certification, it requires documented project leadership experience before you can sit the exam.
The current exam is predictive, agile and hybrid aware: roughly half the content reflects agile and hybrid ways of working, not just traditional waterfall. Questions are scenario-based and test judgement about people, process and the business environment.
Who it is for
- Project managers with real delivery experience
- Team leads formalising a move into project management
- Professionals in organisations that require or reward PMP
Who it is not for
- People without real project-leadership hours — PMI requires documented experience.
- Those wanting an agile-only credential (look at PSM).
- Anyone seeking a quick, cheap cert.
Exam structure
| People | 42% — leading and building teams |
|---|---|
| Process | 50% — the technical work of managing projects |

How the exam is weighted

Is it worth it?
For experienced project managers, PMP is one of the best-paid certifications and is often listed as required or preferred in job postings. It is not worth pursuing without the eligibility experience, and it is less relevant if you work in a purely agile delivery role where PSM or other agile credentials fit better.
What to do next
PMP is the senior PM standard. Pair with agile (PSM), or compare PMP vs PRINCE2 and PMP vs CAPM to position yourself.
FAQ
- Do I need experience to take the PMP?
- Yes. PMI requires documented hours leading projects plus 35 hours of project management education. PMI may audit your application, so keep accurate records.
- Is PMP or PRINCE2 better?
- Neither is universally better. PMP is experience-based and dominant in North America and globally; PRINCE2 is a method-based certification strong in the UK, Europe and government. Many people hold both.
- How long does PMP study take?
- Most candidates study two to four months. The challenge is applying judgement to scenarios rather than memorising a process.
