The Salesforce Certified Platform App Builder validates that you can design, build and deploy custom applications on the Salesforce Lightning Platform using declarative tools - clicks, not code. It is the credential for people who model data, automate business processes with Flow, and assemble Lightning apps and pages without writing Apex.
The exam is practical in spirit. It covers the full app-building workflow: custom objects and fields, the relationships that connect them, formula and roll-up summary fields, record-triggered and scheduled automation in Flow, the Lightning App Builder, and how you move work safely from a sandbox to production with change sets or packages.
Salesforce restructured this exam in December 2025. The earlier nine-section outline (which split out areas such as security, social, mobile and reporting) was consolidated into five weighted sections. If you are revising from older material, work from the current five-domain guide, because the weighting and grouping have changed.
Platform App Builder is the natural step up from the Salesforce Administrator credential: Administrator proves you can run an org day to day, while App Builder proves you can extend it with custom apps.
✓ Who it is for
- Salesforce administrators ready to prove declarative app-building skills
- Consultants and business analysts who configure data models and automation
- Builders who design Lightning apps and pages with clicks rather than Apex
✕ Who it is not for
- Pure beginners with no Salesforce exposure - start on Trailhead and consider the Administrator credential first.
- Developers wanting to prove Apex, LWC and code skills - look at the Platform Developer I certification instead.
- People who only need to use Salesforce (run reports, work records) rather than build on it.

Is it worth it?
Yes for admins and consultants on the Salesforce platform, where a large, well-paid certification economy rewards proof you can build, not just use. Platform App Builder is the standard signal that you can design data models, automate with Flow and assemble Lightning apps declaratively. If your goal is writing Apex and Lightning Web Components, the Platform Developer I credential fits better; if you are still learning the platform, take the Administrator credential first and build App Builder on top.

What to do next
Platform App Builder is the declarative app-building credential. From here, branch toward code with Platform Developer I, or broaden your platform breadth with the Administrator credential if you have not taken it. Many people pair it with the Administrator credential to cover both running and extending an org.
On exam day
Scheduled through Pearson VUE, at a test centre or online with a proctor. The exam runs 105 minutes and has 60 scored multiple-choice / multiple-select questions plus 5 unscored questions (65 in total). The pass mark is 63%. Confirm the current details and pricing when you register.
Keeping your certification
No fixed expiry date. You keep the credential active by completing the free Trailhead maintenance module that Salesforce releases with each platform update; missing the maintenance deadline can make a credential inactive, so watch your Trailhead dashboard.
FAQ
- Is the Salesforce Platform App Builder certification worth it?
- Yes if you build on Salesforce or want to. It is the standard credential proving you can design data models, automate with Flow and assemble Lightning apps declaratively, and the platform supports a large, well-paid certification economy. If your goal is writing Apex code, Platform Developer I fits better.
- Platform App Builder or Salesforce Administrator - which first?
- Most people take the Administrator credential first, because it covers the core platform skills employers ask for first. Platform App Builder builds on that and leans toward declarative app building. If you administer an org day to day, start with Administrator; if you design and build custom apps, App Builder is the natural next step.
- Do I need to know how to code for Platform App Builder?
- No. Platform App Builder is a declarative certification - it tests building with clicks: objects, fields, relationships, formulas, Flow and the Lightning App Builder. Apex and Lightning Web Components belong to the Platform Developer I exam, not this one.
- How long is the Platform App Builder exam and how many questions?
- The exam is 105 minutes. It has 60 scored questions plus 5 unscored questions, 65 in total, in multiple-choice and multiple-select format. It is proctored through Pearson VUE, at a test centre or online.
- What score do I need to pass Platform App Builder?
- 63%. The unscored questions do not count toward your result; only the 60 scored questions do.
- How much does the Platform App Builder exam cost?
- US$200 to register and US$100 to retake, plus applicable taxes. Pricing can vary, so confirm the current fee with Salesforce. Trailhead study materials and a Developer Edition org for practice are free.
- Does the Platform App Builder certification expire?
- There is no fixed expiry date. You keep it active by completing the free Trailhead maintenance module that Salesforce releases with each platform update. Miss the maintenance window and the credential can become inactive, so check your Trailhead dashboard.
- Did the Platform App Builder exam change recently?
- Yes. Salesforce restructured it in December 2025, consolidating the earlier nine-section outline into five weighted sections: Salesforce Fundamentals, Data Modeling and Management, Business Logic and Process Automation, User Interface, and App Deployment. Study from the current five-domain exam guide, not older nine-section material.
- Can I self-study for Platform App Builder?
- Yes. The free Trailhead trails plus the official exam guide cover the content, and a free Developer Edition org lets you build everything hands-on. Doing the work - creating objects and relationships, writing formulas and Flows, building a Lightning app - matters far more than reading about it.
