Overview
The CAPM (Certified Associate in Project Management) is PMI's entry-level certification for people who do not yet have the experience required for the PMP. Instead of work experience, it requires 23 hours of project management education, which PMI's own free course satisfies.
It covers project management fundamentals, predictive (waterfall) approaches, and agile and business analysis frameworks, giving newcomers a recognised first credential and a stepping stone toward the PMP.
Who it is for
- Students and recent graduates
- People new to project management with no leadership experience yet
- Team members who want a recognised first step before PMP
Who it is not for
- Experienced project managers — go straight for PMP.
- Those who already meet the PMP experience requirements.
- People who do not work near projects at all.
Exam structure
| Project Management Fundamentals and Core Concepts | Roles, lifecycles, key terms |
|---|---|
| Predictive, Plan-Based Methodologies | Traditional waterfall delivery |
| Agile Frameworks and Methodologies | Agile and adaptive approaches |
| Business Analysis Frameworks | Requirements and stakeholder needs |
How the exam is weighted
- Project Management Fundamentals & Core Concepts 36%
- Predictive, Plan-Based Methodologies 17%
- Agile Frameworks / Methodologies 20%
- Business Analysis Frameworks 27%
Realistic study time
- Some project exposure 40-60 hours over 6-8 weeks
- New to project work 80-100 hours
Bars show relative effort, not a guarantee. Your time depends on background and study method.

Is it worth it?
Worth it for newcomers who cannot yet meet PMP eligibility and want a recognised credential. If you already have project leadership experience, skip CAPM and go straight to the PMP, which carries far more weight.
What to do next
CAPM is the stepping stone to PMP once you have the experience. Compare PMP vs CAPM to time your move.
FAQ
- CAPM or PMP?
- CAPM is the entry-level option with no experience requirement; PMP requires documented project leadership and is far more valuable. Use CAPM as a stepping stone if you do not qualify for PMP yet.
- Do I need experience for CAPM?
- No work experience is required, only 23 hours of project management education, which PMI's free online course provides.
- Is CAPM worth it for career changers?
- It can be, as a recognised first credential while you build experience toward the PMP. On its own it is entry level.
