Overview

The SHRM Certified Professional (SHRM-CP) is the entry-to-mid-level HR certification from SHRM, the largest HR professional body in the US. Unlike HRCI's PHR, it has no formal degree or experience requirement, so it suits people who are early in their HR career or moving into the field. It is aimed at HR professionals in operational, generalist roles rather than senior strategy roles, which are the focus of the SHRM-SCP.

What sets the SHRM-CP apart is its structure. The exam tests two things side by side: HR knowledge and behavioural competencies. About half the scored questions are knowledge items and about half are situational-judgement items that present a workplace scenario and ask what you would do. This reflects SHRM's view that effective HR is as much about behaviour and judgement as it is about technical knowledge. Confirm the current exam details and eligibility on the SHRM certification page before you apply.

✓ Who it is for

  • Early-to-mid-career HR professionals in operational or generalist roles
  • People moving into HR who want a credential with no experience gate
  • Practitioners who want a certification that tests judgement as well as knowledge

✕ Who it is not for

  • Senior HR leaders focused on strategy - the SHRM-SCP is the senior-level credential.
  • Those who specifically need a more technical, operational exam - HRCI's PHR may fit better.
  • People outside HR looking for a general management qualification - this is HR-specific.

Exam structure

HR Knowledge Domains (3)People, Organization and Workplace - the technical HR knowledge tested by the knowledge items (around 80 of the 110 scored questions).
Behavioral Competency Clusters (3)Leadership, Interpersonal and Business - applied judgement tested by situational-judgement items (around 54 of the 110 scored questions).
Knowledge vs behaviour balanceRoughly half the scored questions are HR knowledge and half are behavioural competency. SHRM does not publish a percentage weight for each individual domain or cluster.

The SHRM-CP maps to early-to-mid-career HR roles, from specialist and generalist up to HR manager. Pay reflects the role, employer and your experience more than the certificate itself; the credential helps signal HR knowledge and judgement. These are indicative US ranges and the certification is one factor among many.

Is it worth it?

Worth it for early-to-mid-career HR professionals, especially in markets where SHRM is the recognised body. Because it has no experience gate, it is an accessible way to demonstrate HR credibility. Senior leaders should consider the SHRM-SCP, and where employers specifically ask for the PHR, weigh HRCI's credential instead.

Career paths featuring SHRM-CP

What to do next

Once you have more senior, strategic HR experience, the SHRM-SCP is the natural progression. If your employers ask specifically for HRCI credentials, the PHR (and later SPHR) is the parallel track.

Keeping your certification

Valid for three years; renew by earning 60 professional development credits (PDCs) within each cycle, or by retaking the exam.

FAQ

Do I need a degree or HR experience to take the SHRM-CP?
No. The SHRM-CP has no formal degree or experience requirement, which is one of its main attractions. It is aimed at early-to-mid-career HR professionals in operational roles. Confirm the current eligibility rules with SHRM before applying.
How is the SHRM-CP exam structured?
It has 134 multiple-choice questions, of which 110 are scored: about 80 HR knowledge items and about 54 situational-judgement items, plus 24 unscored pretest questions. You get roughly 3 hours and 40 minutes, at a Prometric centre or online.
What is the passing score for the SHRM-CP?
SHRM does not publish a fixed passing line. Scores are scaled from 120 to 200, and a pass is reported as 200. Because the line is not published, focus on broad competence across all domains rather than chasing a target percentage.
SHRM-CP or PHR - which should I take?
Both are well recognised. The SHRM-CP has no experience requirement and tests HR knowledge plus behavioural competencies; HRCI's PHR requires HR experience and is more technical and operational. Check which your target employers ask for, and pick by your experience level.
How do I keep the SHRM-CP current?
It is valid for three years. You renew it by earning 60 professional development credits (PDCs) in that cycle, or by retaking the exam. Confirm the current recertification rules with SHRM.
