This is an eight-week SHRM-CP plan that covers both halves of the exam. It works through the three HR knowledge domains first, then dedicates time to the behavioural competencies and situational-judgement practice, and finishes with timed mocks. SHRM does not publish per-domain weights, so it treats the areas as roughly equal. Confirm the current outline and eligibility on the SHRM certification page.
Weeks 1-2 - People domain
Talent acquisition, employee engagement and retention, learning and development, and total rewards. This is core HR knowledge, so build a solid base here.
Weeks 3-4 - Organization domain
HR function structure, workforce management, employee and labour relations, technology, and HR in the global context. Broad ground - pace yourself across the two weeks.
Week 5 - Workplace domain
Diversity, equity and inclusion, risk management, corporate social responsibility, and employment-law basics. Smaller in volume but still tested, so do not skip it.
Weeks 6-7 - Behavioural competencies
The Leadership, Interpersonal and Business clusters. Practise situational-judgement questions: read a workplace scenario and pick the most effective HR response. This is roughly half the scored exam, so give it real time.
Week 8 - Practice and review
Sit full-length, timed practice exams. When you review misses, separate knowledge gaps from judgement gaps, and aim to be consistently comfortable across both halves before booking.
Tips
- Study both halves: HR knowledge and behavioural judgement.
- Do not chase a target percentage - SHRM does not publish a passing line.
- Avoid “exam dump” sites - they breach SHRM policy and copyright.
