The Microsoft Certified: Fabric Data Engineer Associate (DP-700) validates that you can ingest and transform data, secure and manage an analytics solution, and monitor and optimise it on Microsoft Fabric. It is the associate-level data-engineering credential for the Fabric stack, covering Lakehouse and Warehouse, Spark notebooks, Dataflows Gen2, pipelines, and real-time data with KQL and Eventhouse.
The exam is hands-on in spirit: it expects you to manipulate and transform data with SQL, PySpark and KQL across the full Fabric workflow, from loading patterns and OneLake shortcuts through to performance tuning. Microsoft role-based certifications expire after one year, but renewal is a free, online, open-book assessment on Microsoft Learn.
DP-700 is the Fabric-era successor to the retired DP-203 (Azure Data Engineer Associate, retired 31 March 2025). Where DP-203 was built around Azure Synapse and Azure Data Factory, DP-700 is built around Microsoft Fabric and OneLake.
✓ Who it is for
- Data engineers who build and run analytics pipelines on Microsoft Fabric
- ETL/ELT and analytics engineers on the Microsoft data stack
- Professionals in Microsoft-centric organisations adopting Fabric and OneLake
✕ Who it is not for
- Report builders and analysts focused on visuals - PL-300 (Power BI Data Analyst) maps to that work.
- People with no SQL, Python or query-language background - build core data skills first.
- Teams standardised on a non-Microsoft cloud - look at the Google Cloud Professional Data Engineer or SnowPro instead.
Exam structure
| Implement and manage an analytics solution | 30–35% |
|---|---|
| Ingest and transform data | 30–35% |
| Monitor and optimize an analytics solution | 30–35% |
How the exam is weighted
- Implement and manage an analytics solution 30-35%
- Ingest and transform data 30-35%
- Monitor and optimize an analytics solution 30-35%
What each domain covers
- Implement and manage an analytics solution
- Configure Fabric workspace settings (Spark, domain, OneLake, Dataflows Gen2) · Lifecycle management: version control, database projects, deployment pipelines · Security and governance: workspace and item access, RLS/CLS/OLS, sensitivity labels, OneLake security · Orchestrate processes with pipelines and notebooks, schedules and event triggers
- Ingest and transform data
- Loading patterns: full and incremental loads, dimensional model prep, streaming loads · Batch ingestion and transformation with Dataflows Gen2, notebooks, KQL and T-SQL · OneLake shortcuts, mirroring and pipelines · Streaming with Eventstreams, Spark structured streaming and KQL windowing
- Monitor and optimize an analytics solution
- Monitor ingestion, transformation and semantic model refresh; configure alerts · Identify and resolve pipeline, Dataflow Gen2, notebook, Eventhouse and T-SQL errors · Optimise Lakehouse tables, warehouses and pipelines · Optimise Spark, Eventstreams/Eventhouses and query performance
Realistic study time
- Working data engineer new to Fabric 50-70 hours over 6-8 weeks
- New to data engineering / Fabric 90-120 hours

Salary & career value
Indicative ranges for orientation only - not surveyed data, and not financial or career advice. Sources and date below.
Pay for DP-700 holders tracks the underlying data-engineering role far more than the single Fabric cert. US aggregators put data engineers broadly in the US$95k-150k range, rising well above that with seniority. These are indicative figures that vary by region, employer and experience, and the certification is one factor among many.
Pass rate: Not published. Microsoft does not release candidate pass rates for DP-700. The only official threshold is the 700/1000 score needed to pass; figures shared online are anecdotal, not an official success rate.
Indicative annual pay (USD), each role's typical band on a shared scale.

Jobs that often ask for it:
- Data engineer
- Analytics engineer
- ETL/ELT developer
- Fabric data engineer
Is it worth it?
Yes for data engineers in organisations adopting Microsoft Fabric, which is increasingly common across Microsoft-centric and DACH enterprises. DP-700 maps directly to day-to-day Fabric work - ingestion, transformation, security and optimisation - and is the current associate-level data-engineering credential on the stack. If your employers run a different cloud, the Google Cloud Professional Data Engineer or a Snowflake certification will carry more weight. Choose the credential that matches the platform on the job postings you are targeting.

What to do next
DP-700 is the core Fabric data-engineering cert. From here, pair it with PL-300 (Power BI Data Analyst) for the reporting side of the stack, or compare it with the Google Cloud Professional Data Engineer and SnowPro Core if you are choosing a data platform.
On exam day
Scheduled through Pearson VUE, at a centre or online. The exam runs 100 minutes and may include interactive question types as well as multiple-choice. Microsoft does not publish the question count; confirm current details when you book.
Keeping your certification
Valid 1 year, but renewal is free: pass a short, unproctored online assessment on Microsoft Learn in the six months before it expires.
FAQ
- Is DP-700 worth it?
- Yes if you work with, or want to work with, Microsoft Fabric - it is the current associate-level data-engineering credential on the stack and is increasingly requested in Microsoft-centric organisations. If your employers use a different cloud, the Google Cloud Professional Data Engineer or a Snowflake certification fits better.
- Is DP-700 the replacement for DP-203?
- Effectively, yes. The Azure Data Engineer Associate (DP-203) retired on 31 March 2025. DP-700 is the Fabric-era data-engineering certification: where DP-203 was built around Azure Synapse and Azure Data Factory, DP-700 is built around Microsoft Fabric and OneLake.
- Do I need a prerequisite to take DP-700?
- No formal prerequisite. Microsoft recommends you be comfortable manipulating and transforming data with SQL, PySpark and KQL, and have experience with data-loading patterns and data architectures, so you can work across the full Fabric workflow.
- How long is the DP-700 exam?
- The exam is 100 minutes. The number of questions is not published by Microsoft, and the exam may include interactive question types. It is proctored and delivered through Pearson VUE.
- What score do I need to pass DP-700?
- 700 out of 1000. Microsoft uses a scaled score, so it is not a simple percentage of questions correct.
- How much does DP-700 cost?
- Around US$165, but Microsoft prices the exam by region, so confirm the current price on the official page. Microsoft Learn materials are free, a Fabric trial capacity is available, and the yearly renewal is a free online assessment.
- Why does the certification expire after a year?
- Microsoft uses annual renewals to keep role-based certifications current. Renewal is free, online and open-book on Microsoft Learn in the six months before it expires.
- Can I self-study for DP-700?
- Yes. The free Microsoft Learn paths plus the official skills-measured study guide and the free practice assessment cover it. Hands-on time in a Fabric workspace - building a Lakehouse, writing notebooks and pipelines, and querying with SQL and KQL - makes the biggest difference.
