The AWS Certified Solutions Architect - Professional (SAP-C02) is the advanced architecture certification from AWS. Where the Associate validates solid single-system design, the Professional tests designing across organisational complexity: multi-account environments, large migrations, cost and security at scale, and continuous improvement of existing systems.
The questions are long, scenario-heavy and often have several defensible answers, so it rewards judgement about trade-offs across the whole AWS platform. AWS recommends a couple of years of hands-on experience before attempting it. There is no longer a requirement to hold the Associate first, but the Associate material is assumed.
✓ Who it is for
- Senior solutions architects designing multi-account, multi-region AWS environments
- Engineers leading large migrations and modernisation programmes onto AWS
- Cloud architects responsible for governance, cost and security at scale
- Solutions Architect Associate holders with a couple of years of real experience levelling up
- Consultants who advise clients on complex AWS architecture trade-offs
✕ Who it is not for
- People new to AWS - start with Cloud Practitioner or the Solutions Architect Associate.
- Developers focused on building applications - the Developer Associate fits better.
- Those wanting a quick exam - the Professional is long and demanding.

- Enterprise Architect
- Cloud Infrastructure Architect
Is it worth it?
Worth it for experienced AWS architects, where it is among the most respected cloud credentials and a strong signal for senior, principal and lead architecture roles. The breadth it forces you to learn (governance, migration, cost and security across organisations) genuinely sharpens real design work. It is not a starting point: without a couple of years of hands-on AWS experience the long, judgement-heavy questions are very hard, and the time is better spent on the Associate first. People who rarely touch large multi-account environments will get less day-to-day return from it.

FAQ
- Do I need the Associate before the Professional?
- No. AWS removed the requirement to hold the Solutions Architect Associate first, but the Associate-level knowledge is assumed, and most people take the Associate on the way up.
- How hard is the AWS SA Professional?
- It is one of the harder AWS exams. The questions are long, scenario-based and often have several plausible answers, so it tests judgement across the whole platform, not recall. Plan for serious preparation and hands-on experience.
- How is it different from the Associate?
- The Associate tests solid single-system design; the Professional tests architecture across organisational complexity - multiple accounts, large migrations, and cost, security and governance at scale.
- How long does it take to study for the SA Professional?
- With Associate-level knowledge and real experience, often a couple of months of focused study. Without that base, considerably longer.
- Does the certification expire?
- Yes, it is valid for three years, after which you recertify.
