- GRE
- Graduate Record Examinations General Test, an admissions test from ETS accepted by most graduate and many MBA programmes.
- How long is the shorter GRE?
- About 1 hour 58 minutes, across five sections, with no break and no unscored research section.
- The three GRE measures
- Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning and Analytical Writing.
- Verbal and Quantitative score scale
- 130 to 170, in one-point increments, for each measure.
- Analytical Writing score scale
- 0 to 6, in half-point increments, from a single essay.
- How many Analytical Writing essays now?
- One: the Analyze an Issue task (the shorter GRE removed the second essay).
- Verbal Reasoning question types
- Reading Comprehension, Text Completion and Sentence Equivalence.
- Quantitative Reasoning question types
- Quantitative Comparison, multiple-choice (select one), multiple-choice (select one or more), and Numeric Entry.

- Arithmetic, algebra, geometry and data analysis - all at high-school level.
- Section-level adaptation
- Your performance on the first Verbal or Quantitative section sets the difficulty of the second, affecting your score.

- Analytical Writing; the Verbal and Quantitative sections follow in some order.

- 27 Verbal Reasoning questions and 27 Quantitative Reasoning questions.
- Calculator on the GRE
- A basic on-screen calculator is provided for the Quantitative sections; you cannot bring your own.
- How long are GRE scores valid?
- Scores are reportable to programmes for five years from the test date.
- GRE fee
- About US $220 in most locations; varies by region. A fee-reduction voucher lowers it to about $100.
- Percentile rank
- The share of test takers you scored above; the same scaled score is a higher percentile on Verbal than on Quant.
- Quantitative Comparison answer choices
- Always the same four: A is greater, B is greater, the two are equal, or it cannot be determined.
- Sentence Equivalence rule
- Pick the two words that both fit the sentence and give it the same meaning.
- Reading Comprehension rule
- The answer must be supported by the passage, not by outside knowledge.
- What Analytical Writing rewards
- A clear position developed with logical reasons and specific examples, well organised - not length or fancy words.
- Who scores the essay?
- A trained human rater together with the e-rater engine; a second human resolves any disagreement.
