Overview
CFA Level III is the final exam in the CFA Program and the most distinctive. It combines essay (constructed-response) questions with item sets and centres on portfolio management and wealth planning. From 2025, candidates choose a specialised pathway — Portfolio Management, Private Markets or Private Wealth — alongside a common core.
The essay section is what trips people up: you must write structured answers, not select options, so timed writing practice and honest self-grading matter as much as content. Passing Level III, plus qualified work experience, earns the CFA charter.
Who it is for
- Candidates who have passed Levels I and II
- Aspiring portfolio managers and private-wealth advisers
- Anyone in the final stretch toward the CFA charter
Who it is not for
- Anyone who has not passed Levels I and II.
- Those uncomfortable with timed written answers — the essay section is unavoidable.
- People whose career does not need the full charter.

Salary & career value
Pass rate: Level III historically has the highest pass rate of the three, often around or above 50% in recent years. Check CFA Institute for the latest figure.
Salary figures are indicative ranges that vary widely by country, sector and seniority — not a promise. Check live data on Glassdoor, the US BLS, ONS (UK) and Job Bank (Canada).
Is it worth it?
If you have reached Level III, finishing is almost always worth it — the charter is the payoff of the whole program. The new element to respect is the essay section: practise writing timed, structured answers, because strong content alone does not guarantee the marks.
What to do next
Pass Level III and complete 4,000 hours of qualified work experience to apply for the CFA charter. See the Portfolio Manager career path.
