Lean Six Sigma Black Belt Study Plan: A 10-Week Schedule

expert

A free 10-week IASSC Lean Six Sigma Black Belt study plan: the DMAIC phases, the deeper statistics - hypothesis testing, regression and DOE - plus practice.

By The Exam Atlas Editorial Team · Verified 2026-06-06

This is a ten-week IASSC Lean Six Sigma Black Belt plan that builds phase by phase through DMAIC and concentrates on the advanced statistics. It puts the most time into Analyze and Improve - hypothesis testing for different data types, multiple regression and design of experiments (DOE) - where most marks are lost. Stretch those weeks if you are new to inferential statistics. Confirm the current body of knowledge on the IASSC certification page.

Week 1 - Define

Selecting and scoping larger projects, voice of the customer and CTQs, problem statements and charters. Black Belts lead projects full-time and coach Green Belts, so focus on framing and leading at scale.

Weeks 2-3 - Measure

Process mapping, data types, measurement-system analysis, descriptive statistics and process capability. These foundations are shared with the Green Belt, so move efficiently if you already hold one.

Weeks 4-6 - Analyze

Inferential statistics and hypothesis testing, including comparisons across groups and non-normal data, plus correlation and regression. This is the first big step up from Green Belt; go slowly and practise choosing the right test.

Weeks 7-8 - Improve

Multiple regression and design of experiments (DOE), then generating, piloting and implementing improvements at scale. DOE in particular is core Black Belt content with no real Green Belt equivalent.

Week 9 - Control

Control plans and statistical process control (SPC) to sustain the gains, and handing the improved process back to the business.

Week 10 - Practice and review

Sit full-length, timed practice exams against the body of knowledge. Four hours is a long sitting, so build the endurance too. Review the reasoning behind every miss, focus on Analyze and Improve, and aim to score comfortably above 70% on fresh questions.

Tips

  • Treat the Analyze and Improve statistics as new material, not Green Belt revision.
  • Do not skip design of experiments (DOE) and multiple regression - they are core Black Belt content.
  • Tie each statistical tool to the type of data it suits, not just to its DMAIC phase.
  • Confirm you are studying the IASSC body of knowledge, not another body’s.

FAQ

How long do I need to study for the Black Belt?
Often 8-12 weeks part-time, longer than the Green Belt. If you are new to inferential statistics, multiple regression and design of experiments (DOE), budget extra weeks for the Analyze and Improve phases, which carry most of the advanced content.
Do I need a Green Belt or training first?
No. The IASSC Black Belt has no prerequisites, so you can self-study against the published body of knowledge. A Green Belt or training helps build the statistics gradually but is not required.
