DMAIC and key tools by phase

  • Define - project charter, voice of the customer (VoC), CTQ tree, SIPOC; scoping and leading larger projects.
  • Measure - process map, data types, measurement-system analysis (MSA), process capability (Cp, Cpk).
  • Analyze - root-cause tools (fishbone, 5 Whys, Pareto), hypothesis testing for different data types (including non-normal), ANOVA-style group comparisons, correlation.
  • Improve - multiple regression, design of experiments (DOE), solution selection, piloting, FMEA, mistake-proofing (poka-yoke).
  • Control - control plan, statistical process control (SPC) charts, standard work.

Where Black Belt goes beyond Green Belt

  • Inferential statistics - choose and interpret the right hypothesis test for the data, including non-normal cases and group comparisons.
  • Multiple regression - model an output from several inputs, not just one.
  • Design of experiments (DOE) - study several factors at once instead of one-factor-at-a-time.
  • Leadership scope - lead larger projects full-time and coach Green Belts.

Core concepts

  • Variation - Six Sigma reduces process variation and defects using data.
  • Defect / DPMO - a defect fails a CTQ; DPMO measures defects per million opportunities.
  • Type I / Type II error - rejecting a true null, or failing to reject a false null - core to hypothesis testing.
  • Black Belt role - leads larger projects full-time and coaches Green Belts.

Common traps

  • Treating it as a longer Green Belt - the Analyze and Improve statistics go much deeper.
  • Skipping design of experiments (DOE) and multiple regression, which are core Black Belt content.
  • Learning tools in isolation instead of by DMAIC phase and data type.
  • Confusing the IASSC route with ASQ’s - they are different bodies.

FAQ

What is the pass mark for the IASSC Black Belt?
A minimum of 70%. The exam is 150 closed-book, proctored questions in four hours, and some forms add unscored questions. Confirm the current format with IASSC.
Are there prerequisites for the IASSC Black Belt?
No. There are no prerequisites to sit the IASSC Black Belt, so you can take it directly. A Green Belt or training helps but is not required; training and real project experience are recommended only.
